Influence of stratosphere-troposphere exchange on surface ozone variations in two Russian cities. Zagainova M. S., Ermakova T. S., Sokolov A. V., Bikbulatov B. A., Koval A. V., Didenko K. A. Proceedings of MGO. 2026. V. 620. P. 149–176.

This study investigates the influence of stratosphere-troposphere exchange
on ground-level ozone formation in the industrial cities of Cherepovets and Lipetsk during the winter-spring periods of 2023 and 2024. The research established that dynamic stratospheric processes directly impacted the troposphere in both years, revealing a confirmed link between sudden stratospheric warmings and ground-level ozone increase episodes. Comprehensive analysis demonstrated that stratospheric intrusions are a significant factor driving substantial increases in ground-level ozone concentrations over the European part of Russia in winter and spring. Understanding this relationship is crucial for refining air quality forecasting models and for accurately attributing high ozone levels, confirming that not all peak ozone events are associated with local pollution sources.

Keywords: ground-level ozone, stratosphere-troposphere exchange, stratospheric intrusions, sudden stratospheric warmings.
