Director, Voeikov Main Geophysical Observatory (MGO) of the Russian Federal Service for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring (Roshydromet), St.Petersburg (since 2007). Head of the Roshydromet Climate Centre (since 2012). Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (Specialty: physics of atmosphere and hydrosphere. Thesis “Study of high-latitude climate dynamics using atmosphere-ocean general circulation models”, 2006).

Scientific field: Global and regional climate 3D modelling; high-latitude climate dynamics; adaptation to climate change.

Publications: over 130. Lead Author of the 3rd, 4th, 5th and Review Editor of the 6th IPCC Assessment reports. Lead Author of the Arctic Council (ACIA-2005; SWIPA-2011, 2017) and Russian national (2008, 2014) climate assessment reports. Author and co-Editor of the “Assessment of macroeconomic impacts of climate change over the territory of Russian Federation till 2030 and beyond” (2011); Author and Editor of the “Report on climate risks over the territory of Russian Federation” (2017).

Medvedev on 17 December 2009).

30 июля 2018 в Общественной Палате Российской Федерации под председательством главы Комиссии ОП РФ по ЖКХ, строительству и дорогам, члена Совета по Арктике и Антарктике Совета Федерации И.Л.Шпектора состоялось заседание круглого стола «Перспективы развития Арктической зоны Российской Федерации через взаимодействие государства, научных и некоммерческих организаций». Председатель региональной общественной организации «Ученый совет Ямало-Ненецкого автономного округа» А. Каримов сказал, что на сегодняшний день в Арктике наблюдается нехватка врачей и учителей, а также специалистов, изучающих Арктику. И для того, чтобы туда привлечь молодых людей для работы в этих направлениях, планируется создание и реализация проекта «Школа Арктики». Участники круглого стола осветили различные аспекты основной темы. От Росгидромета в работе круглого приняли директор ГГО В.М.Катцов и зам.директора ААНИИ И.М.Ашик. В.М. Катцов, в частности, отметил, что важнейшим контекстом для решения практически любых арктических проблем является изменение климата. Арктика, являясь одним из наиболее уязвимых к глобальному потеплению регионом, а также не только индикатором, но и фактором изменений климата, остается средоточием сложнейших научных проблем, которые нуждаются в молодых мотивированных исследователях.
